Key Learning Areas Theme

Mathematics, Society and Environment   Design a 3D golf hole using correct scale and measurement.

Year Level Student Age

  Year 9

  15
Ability Level Class Size

  Mixed
  20

Computer Access Duration

Students have access to a computer lab within the school for two 50-minute sessions a week over a two-week period.

  2 weeks
Rationale

This unit integrates aspects across the Key Learning Areas of Mathematics and Society and Environment.

It involves students creating a realistic 3D golf hole and flight of the golf ball based on certain scale and measurement criteria.

The classroom teacher had seen other teachers flag similar activities on the Kahootz Teacher Message Forums.

Student Tasks

The class was provided with an activity outline by the teacher that required them to produce the following by the end of the 2 weeks:

Create a realistic golf hole that meets the dimensions and criteria set down. (e.g. length of the hole, height of trees, distance the ball travels, etc)
Create measurement reference Object that can be used to calculate the correct dimensions.
Display a realistic trajectory for the golf ball using keypoint animation.
Use World keypoint animation to fly the viewer through the hole and follow the flight of the ball.

Involvement for Xpression Participant

Each participant can verify the accuracy of the measurements using the measurement reference. (e.g. length of the hole, height of the trees, etc)
Keypoint animations can be interrogated to see if the trajectory is realistic.

Learning Outcomes for Student Creator

Ability to show accurate scale and measurements.
Synchronising the Object and World keypoint animations so that the viewer can follow the ball in flight.
Calculating the time required to display the accurate flight of the ball.
Allows the student to demonstrate their spatial understanding and grasp of measure concepts.

Collaborative Potential

Students can compare measurement references to assess accuracy
Students can interrogate each other's Xpression by de-constructing the components.
Other classrooms could be challenged to come up with designs for other scale and measurement activities, such as an orienteering course, bowling lane or swimming pool.
