Computer Access Duration

We have 3 computers in the classroom and a lab of 16. Students have 30 mins a week in the computer lab. They worked in pairs or groups of 3 for this project.

  Approx 3 hours
Rationale

Students were studying a unit on Gold and we were keen to trial the "Kahootz" software. We loaded Kahootz on 4 computers in the lab and students worked in groups during our computer time each week. As the software was new, more time was spent using the skills disc on my laptop, the posters around the wall and trial and error. A lot of collaboration and co-operation occurred amongst the groups. The task was to see what they could do and work out together - and of course they wanted to know and do everything! The problem as such was small - to show the travels of a migrant worker to Melbourne, on his or her way to the Goldfields.

Student Tasks

The students were to research how people traveled to the Goldfields. They read some diary entries from people who had made their way to Australia, enduring hardships such as sickness, poor weather, dietary needs and conditions on the boat. The students had to plot their journey to Australia.
