Rationale
| |
This unit integrates aspects across the Key Learning Areas of Society and Environment, Science and Information and Communication Technology.
It involves students researching how an environment can be transformed through the use of irrigation, underground water and watering
mechanisms such as windmills pumps and solar energy. The students were required to make a 'before' and 'after' Xpression showing the transformation.
The classroom teacher saw similar examples of environmental projects outlined on the Kahootz Teacher Message Forums. The classroom teacher
was able to go to a number of Kahootz Project Spaces as a result and view examples of how those teachers had constructed their units of work.

Student Tasks
| |
| |
The class was provided with an activity outline by the teacher that
required them to produce the following by the end of the 3 weeks:
Research information regarding irrigation and transforming dry environments.
Choose a Kahootz 'world' that would be an appropriate arid setting.
Place Objects that reflect the lack of water (e.g. trees or plants with brown leaves, wilting plants etc)
Use Swatching to change the World and Object textures to a desert-like state.
Create an animated 'fly-through' of each Scene illustrating the key elements. |
Place appropriate sounds on the objects.

Involvement for Xpression Participant
| |
| |
Each participant needs to explore the 'after'
Scene thoroughly to work out how the irrigation works and what energy sources have been used. |
Interrogate the type of Object and World keypoint animation used. |
Examine which Swatches have been used to transform the original World used. |
| |
Learning Outcomes for Student Creator
| |
| |
Researching information relevant to the environment. |
Creating a realistic eco-system. |
Developing an understanding of how environments can be adapted, changed or modified through the use of Swatching. |
Students experiment with various types of animation techniques. |
Becomes a discussion starter for other students. |
Allows the student to demonstrate their understanding of environmental concepts. |
| |
Collaborative Potential
| |
| |
Students can compare techniques used to convey information. |
Other students could add to or adapt the transformed environment. |
The class could challenge others to come up with different types of environmental transformations such as arctic or aquatic settings. |
